Russ & Bee Maloof moved to Oregon to make wine and it started with a single barrel. Hailing from Philadelphia, Russ and Bee began producing a very modest amount of wine, starting with the 2015 vintage. Their winemaking project was self funded and produced while simultaneously working full-time gigs. Today, Maloof Wines has grown to include a winemaking facility and an estate vineyard, No Clos Radio, that’s shared with friends Jim and Jenny (Fossil & Fawn). Maloof’s ethos is simple: make wines full of energy with the goal of capturing a place and time in each bottle. They work solely with growers who farm organically, achieving organic certification for No Clos Radio in 2022.

Vineyard // Estate vineyard and winery site for Maloof Wines and Fossil & Fawn. Originally planted in the early 70s by Harvey Shafer. 27 acres, 500ft elevation

Farming // Own rooted, dry farmed, planted in 1973. Organic farming program since January 2020 (previously sustainable), beginning organic certification process through CCOF in spring 2022.

Soil // Jory & Loess, with pisolitic deposits of iron and manganese, that are particular to the newly minted

Harvesting // By hand, harvested on October 21st.

Winemaking // Pressed after a couple hours after the fruit was foot trodden in picking bins. Fermented and aged in neutral burgundy oak barrels. Filtered at bottling. 9g/L sugar. 30ppm total Sulfur.

Harvesting // By hand, harvested on October 7th.

Winemaking // Direct pressed. Fermented and aged in neutral Burgundy barrels, and left on the lees for 7 months with no battonage. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. 30ppm total added so2.

Soils // Marine sedimentary with granite deposits

Farming Practices // Converted to biodynamic practices in 2007, Demeter certified biodynamic since 2010.

Winemaking // Destemmed and fermented on the skins in open top fermenters with daily pigéage until fully dry. 15 to 20% of the fruit is carbonically fermented separately for the same period. Both lots are then pressed off together, and moved to neutral Burgundy oak barrels to age for 9 to 10 months. Bottled without fining or filtration.
